On 29 January 1985 the BBC published BEEB, "The BBC Junior Television Magazine," as a rival to the
popular Look-In. Each issue of the magazine featured a 3-page comic strip of The Tripods, with
two pages in colour and one in black and white (except issues 18-20, which had two pages only).
Far from being a mere retelling of the television episodes, the
strip shows Will, Henry & Beanpole engaged in new and untold adventures on their way to the White
Mountains. The author of the strip is uncredited and unknown, but the artwork is drawn by John M. Burns.
BEEB was not entirely successful and was cancelled before six months had passed. The general rumour
floating around the internet is that there were a total of thirteen issues published, but this is untrue;
twenty issues have surfaced.
Enjoy the following Tripods strips, scanned from the original comics. They are
presented as fairly large images, roughly 750x1050 pixels, which should provide comfortable reading
from a monitor.
Special thanks goes to Colin Caulkins, who kindly donated BEEB issues 19 & 20, allowing the
entire collection to be completed - something which seemed close to impossible judging by how rarely
the magazine shows up on eBay.
Unfortunately, issue 20 leaves a Tripods story hanging in mid-air. It would be nice
to be able to complete it. I would be very grateful if anyone has any information regarding this;
maybe John Burns himself has the unpublished originals lying around somewhere.
